Helical Antenna - Structure, Modes of Operation & Applications

Helical Antenna:

  • Helical Antenna is an antenna consisting of one or more conducting wires wound in the form of helix.
  • It is a broadband VHF and UHF antenna
  • It is used to provide circular polarization

Structure:

  • It consists of the helix of thick copper wire which is connected to the ground plate
  • The helix is fed by a coaxial cable

Design Parameters:

  • The radiation of Helical antenna depends on : the diameter of the helix (D), the turn spacing (S) and Pitch angle

Mode of Operations:

  • Normal or Perpendicular Mode
  • Axial or Beam Mode

Applications:

  • It is used for space and satellite communication
  • It is used for telemetry link
  • It is used in Radio astronomy
  • It is used in VHF and UHF applications
