Introduction to Microwave System - Advantages and Applications

Microwaves:

  • Microwaves are electromagnetic waves with wavelength ranging from 1 cm to 1 mm
  • The frequency range is from 1 GHz to 300 GHz

Microwave Frequency Band details are given.

Microwave System:

  • Microwave system includes Transmitter Subsystem and Receiver Subsystem
  • Transmitter Subsystem includes Microwave source, Attenuator, Transmitting antenna
  • Receiver Subsystem includes Receiving Antenna, Amplifier and Detector
Advantages:
  • Wider Bandwidth
  • Very high speed of operation
  • High antenna gain
  • Better resolution
  • Lower Interference
Disadvantages:
  • Microwave components are very expensive
  • Use of high speed semiconductors like GaAs, etc.,
  • Difficult to design and analyze the microwave circuits
Applications:
  • Communication Systems:
    • Satellite Communication, Telemetry, etc.,
  • RADAR System:
    • Search & Rescue operation
    • Navigation & Tracking
  • Microwave Landing System (MLS)
  • Microwave Heating:
