Ohm's law - Significance and Its Limitations

Ohm's Law:

  • In 1827, the Scientist George Ohm discovered a law that relates the voltage and current in an electric circuit.
  • The current flowing through the electric circuit is directly proportional to the potential difference across the circuit provided the temperature remains constant
Significance of Ohm's Law:
  • It is used in the design process of any appliances consisting of electric components.
  • Ex: 
    • Electric Heaters, etc.,
    • It is widely used in circuit analysis to find the unknown quantities (ie) Voltage, Current, Resistance, Efficiency, etc.,
Limitations:
  • It cannot be applied to non-linear devices like Diode, Regulator, etc.,
  • It cannot be applied to non-metallic conductor
  • It is applicable only for constant temperature. 
  • If the temperature varies, it cannot be applied.
