Resistors in Series - Voltage Division Rule - Problems solved

Resistors in Series:

  • Resistors are connected one after the other
  • It is also called as End-to-end connection (or) Cascade connection
Characteristics:
  • In series connection, the same current flows through all the resistors (I).
  • For each resistance, there will be a voltage drop according to Ohm's Law
Advantages:
  • The series connection is used in decorative serial light set where many lamps of low voltages are operated using main supply
  • A variable resistance is connected in series with the load wherever variable voltage is to be given to a load
Disadvantages:
  • If any break takes place at any point in a series circuit, there is no current flow and the entire circuit becomes useless.
  • Powers are additive
