Coefficient Quantization & Its Effects - Problems Solved

Coefficient Quantization:

  • Quantization of coefficients in digital filters produces an error
  • Theoretically, the filter coefficients are computed to infinite precision.
  • But in digital system, the filter coefficients are represented in binary number system and stored in the finite size registers
  • Hence the filter coefficients must  be quantized to finite size using truncation / rounding method
Effects of Coefficient Quantization:
  • Due to the coefficient quantization, the response of the filter deviates from desired response of the system
  • It modifies the pole - zero locations of the transfer function after quantization
  • Quantized coefficients may lie outside the unit circle of the z-plane which leads to unstable condition.
